Hi Somers/Lakeside Families and Staff,
We’re excited to welcome Alex Ator as our new superintendent! Alex brings fresh energy and a thoughtful approach to leadership, and we’re looking forward to the positive impact he’ll have on our schools and community.
Here’s a look at what was covered at our most recent school board meeting. From community concerns to committee updates, there was a lot of meaningful conversation focused on keeping our schools safe, supported, and connected.
Public Engagement & Community Concerns
The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a quick reminder about public participation guidelines to make sure everyone feels heard and supported in the right way. A new 360° panoramic camera was introduced to help with meeting documentation and transparency—another small step forward in improving communication.
One of the main topics was the community’s concern over a proposed cannabis dispensary near the elementary school. A written statement from a community member expressed strong opposition, and another member voiced concerns about student safety, community standards, and how the location contradicts the district’s drug-free values. The business owner, in question, reiterated their commitment to creating safe practices for traffic, following required zoning and application laws along with their ties to the community and school.
Superintendent Alex Ator outlined the actions the district has already taken, including filing a complaint and seeking clarity on zoning rules. Board members and the public also discussed ideas like advocacy efforts and possible legal avenues to verify all legal requirements have been met for the operation of the business.
Safety, Growth & Infrastructure
The board talked through several ideas to improve school safety and infrastructure, including safer pathways to school and planning for future growth. Flathead Electric has offered programs like LED lighting conversions and capital credits that could help schools save on energy costs while making facilities safer and more efficient.
There was also discussion about how new housing developments might impact the community and the opportunity this may present to review current infrastructure's ability to meet increasing demand while providing safety and efficiency regarding access to and from the schools.
Communication, Staffing & Leadership Style
Superintendent Ator shared some of his early reflections after spending time meeting with staff. He’s already connected with nearly half the team, asking questions about job satisfaction, support, and ownership in their work. Feedback so far has been positive, and staff members have appreciated the chance to share openly.
Superintendent Ator is also rolling out a note-taking link to provide transparent, ongoing updates from his office to the board. This tool will soon include visuals and bi-weekly summaries to help the board stay informed and connected throughout the school year.
Committees, Curriculum & Representation
The board reviewed committee assignments and emphasized the importance of staff involvement—especially in areas like wellness, policy, and curriculum development. There’s a shared commitment to strong professional relationships and clear, respectful communication between the board and faculty.
The Faculty Advisory Council (FAC) was discussed, with some questions raised about structure, anonymity, and the importance of following proper complaint procedures to build trust and maintain accountability. The goal is to ensure concerns are addressed in a way that’s both fair and effective.
Superintendent Ator will move forward with posting the notice for an opening of a Trustee position on the school board. With a recent resignation, the board is tasked with the opportunity to appoint a representative of the community to finish out the vacant term. Submittals and inquiries are to be sent to Superintendent Ator.

There was approved staffing changes;
